Design/Creative Assistant

Activate The City! is a social enterprise and creative agency for change, that facilitates youth-led community development.

We provide avenues for youth engagement and empowerment by giving young people tools and resources to activate projects in vacant and underused spaces to drive social change in communities that need it most. Our mission is to help young people transform spaces and create a long lasting legacy within their communities.
So far, we have been recognised by the DBACE Awards 2019 and featured in publications such as Lecture in Progress . Most recently, we made the Regenerative List - a list of ‘100 organisations and individuals working to protect our people and our planet’.

We are looking for a new team member to contribute to our mission by helping us deliver some exciting projects in Tottenham, North London. This is a role that doesn’t require past experience. Overall we’re looking for someone that is enthusiastic, keen to learn on the job and undertake training where needed.

Activate The City, is a youth-led social enterprise and creative placemaking agency.

We empower young people by helping them activate vacant and underused spaces to drive social change in the communities that need it the most.

We’re on a mission to help young people transform spaces and create a long lasting impact within their communities.

We take over spaces and run educational programmes that focus on the built environment and equipping young people with skills in design and creative entrepreneurship.

Our vision is to develop the next generation of community champions that are not only proud of where they are from but are actively working to address social and economic problems in their communities.

During the 6 months of your placement, you'll get to:

  • Work on social media campaigns and get to create graphics for our Instagram page and help us launch a new website.
  • Learn to make creative content using different forms of media (graphic/video/digital).
  • Help us generate new ideas for design workshops to be delivered online or in person.
  • Work on collating promotional materials to attract new project partners.
  • Work on our West Green Road high street project with Haringey Council.
  • Get to go on site visits around London to look at case study public spaces and youth spaces to feed into our ongoing research (subject to Covid-19 restrictions).

You must be aged 16-24 years old, and unemployed and claiming Universal Credit.

This job role also require the following:

Have a passion for working with young people and their wider community.

Have an interest in built environment and/or design.

Interested in how design can be used as a tool for social change.

Ability to work collaboratively on projects and manage your own workload.

Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Google Drive.

Good written and verbal communication skills.

Comfortable engaging with young people aged 14-25.

Some experience with Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop is desirable, but training can be provided.

This is a role that doesn’t require past experience.
Overall we’re looking for someone that is enthusiastic, keen to learn on the job and undertake training where needed.

This programme is being delivered as part of the government’s Kickstart Scheme.

To be eligible to apply you must be aged 18 – 24 and claiming universal credit.
